12/24/2013... My Journey to have a baby began in January 2012. I stopped taking the pill after about 10+ years and I was 28 years old. I figured I would stop taking the pill and give it a couple months then start trying to make a baby with my husband. After just a couple months of being off the pill I realized that my menstrual cycles were irregular. 20 days, 15 days, 50 days, 30 days, then 85 days! I visited my OB and after running some tests they determined that I had polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS. With this condition, sometimes your egg fully develops and is released, but sometimes it doesn't develop and then just stays in your ovary giving you no chance to conceive in a given month. It isn't clear what causes PCOS and there isn't a cure. They have found that weight, insulin, smoking and hormone imbalances can be contributing factors. I had no problems with insulin, was overweight by about 30-50lbs, but also not unhealthy, exercised fairly regularly and ate a balanced diet. I still smoked but would cut back, then quit, then start again and repeat the cycle.
Once my doctor explained that I had PCOS, I knew the next step would be medication. In addition to that, I felt like my doctor wasn't really that invested in helping me and I felt like just a number at the office. There was one instance where I went in for blood work and just wanted to ask my doctor or any doctor there a question and they said I had to make an appointment to do that even though I was already in the office! Two things occurred to me at that moment, one, I had to find a different doctor and two, I needed to find some other more natural way to help my situation as an alternative to just taking medication. I researched Acupuncture and found that Dr. Wang had some impressive credentials and figured I would give him a call.
I was able to get an appointment the very next day. Having never tried acupuncture, I was nervous when I arrived at my appointment. When I met Dr. Wang, we started a conversation about my background and reasons for trying acupuncture. He spent a lot of time asking questions about my medical history, current ailments, symptoms etc. He asked all the questions a doctor should ask you, but never do. Instantly, I felt like he was taking a thorough background and it was a good feeling to believe that someone cared and wanted to help. He explained that in order to help me, I would need to do acupuncture on a regular basis because my body would take some time to reset itself. He also explained that a lot of your ovarian function can be related to your kidney health and blood flow. It was especially interesting for me to hear this since I had some kidney stones over the last couple years. After about a 30 minute conversation, I rolled up my pant legs, shirt sleeves and exposed a small section of my stomach. He inserted the needles in my feet, arms, legs, belly and forehead. I felt a little sensation when they were going in, but it didn't hurt and as soon as they were in, I didn't feel them at all. After the needles were in, Dr. Wang put on some relaxing music and left the room for about 30 mins. I didn't fall asleep, but I was definitely relaxed. The feeling affirmed that at a minimum the needles certainly had an impact on my body. My first visit occurred in October 2012. After each visit I felt relaxed and refreshed.
On one of my first visits, Dr. Wang said that in addition to the acupuncture treatments he wanted me to take some Chinese Herbs. I was ok with this b/c they are natural and I was trying to avoid using prescription medicine. As I mentioned before, my menstrual cycle was not regular. In October my cycle was 45 days. In November it was 29, by December it was 32 days, January 2013 was 30 days and then every month after that was between 28-30 days. In just one month of treatment, my cycle became regular! For at least the first 2-3 months I saw Dr. Wang weekly or bi-weekly. After that I would go bi-weekly or once every 3 weeks.
I did start taking a drug called Metformin in early 2013. My OB recommended it and Dr. Wang confirmed that this drug might also help regulate my insulin which as previously mentioned can be a contributing factor to PCOS. During the first half of 2013, I went to acupuncture regularly and started to exercise a little more and work on my diet. At first, I just tried to reduce the amount of carbs that I ate. Between Oct 2012 and April 2013 I probably lost about 15lbs. In March, my OB and I decided that I should also try taking Letrozole which is an alternative drug to Clomid. The goal of Letrozole is to help the egg fully develop. Letrozole only stays in your system for a short period of time, so there isn't an increased chance for birth defects. I decided it was worth a shot. When on Letrozole, you have to have your blood tested once a month to make sure that you ovulated and that all your levels are good. Each month while on Letrozole, I ovulated, but didn't get pregnant.
In June, I read a book called "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman and it gave me a new perspective on food. I was always someone who ate a balanced diet, but he explains what the best foods for you are in a very scientific way. The gist is you should eat 90% fruits and vegetables, and 10% should be made up of things like nuts, beans, grains and a little meat and dairy. Fruits and vegetables actually have most of the protein and vitamins and minerals that you need. He also explained that certain foods can contribute to hormone imbalances and cancers. As I read, I encorporated more fruits and vegetables in my diet and cut out a lot of meat... By mid July I lost a total of about 30lbs and never really went on a diet or strenuous exercise plan. I still smoked socially and would have drinks socially on the weekends. In late July 2013, I was expecting to get my period and when it didn't come on Day 28, I took a pregnancy test. I thought I saw a faint line there, but couldn't be sure. So on Day 29, I took another and the same thing occurred. On Day 30, I bought a test that actually said "Pregnant" or "Not Pregnant" and it was confirmed, we were pregnant expecting our first baby! Of course, I immediately stopped smoking and drinking and did my best to eat well. I ordered Dr. Fuhrman's gentle prenatal vitamins and DHA and took it regularly. I had very little nausea and for the most part felt good throughout the first trimester! Currently I am 6 months pregnant and everything is going really well! In the end I am positive that the combination of Dr. Wang's acupuncture treatment, the right diet and some OB care helped me to get pregnant. From the time I started seeing Dr. Wang, it took about 8 months for me to get pregnant, which actually falls within the time frame of normal. If I didn't have acupuncture to keep the blood flowing and keep me relaxed, it may have taken a lot longer, been more stressful and cost a lot more money to get pregnant. I will always be thankful to Dr. Wang for his care and treatments! He is someone you can rely on and trust! - Ashley Kinney
