Menopause is the
cessation of a woman's menstrual periods and usually occurs
between ages 42 and 55. During menopause many women experience
such symptoms as hot flashes, depression, anxiety, insomnia,
fatigue, heart palpitations, and weight gain.
Until recently physicians routinely prescribed estrogens for
women past 35 who complained of hot flashes and other symptoms
associated with menopause. Unfortunately, this medical
practice greatly increased the chances for developing cancer,
thrombophlebitis, strokes and heart attacks in many women.
Most physicians are now aware of this danger and prescribe
psychotropic drugs instead.

Psychotropic
drugs apparently do not promote cancer, but there is evidence
that they may damage heart muscle and the brain. These
tranquilizers impair coordination and cause drowsiness. In
many cases they increase depression. The antidepressant drugs,
with which the tranquilizers are often combined, are seldom
very effective and produce many serious side effects.

For
thousands of years, acupuncture and Chinese herbs have helped
women in the Orient to overcome menopause with ease.
Acupuncture regulates menopausal hormone changes and blood
flow by naturally balancing the body system through needling techniques.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective substitute for drugs in
treating menopausal symptoms. A patient usually begins to feel
better after the first few treatments but should take at least
six for lasting relief. Women who have been taking estrogens
and have persistent hot flashes may require more treatments.
